The medieval capital of Sri Lanka from the 11th to 13th centuries, Polonnaruwa is a remarkably well-preserved archaeological site featuring royal palaces, intricate stone temples, ancient reservoirs, and the magnificent Gal Vihara – four monumental Buddha figures carved directly into a single granite face. The ruins spread across a manageable compact area and are ideally explored by bicycle in the early morning. Best visited between May and September.
